Something Not Right with Your Light?

One of the twenty-year-old tube skylights after being repaired.

Have your old tube skylights stopped giving out light? Has the trim ring or diffuser fallen from the ceiling? Are there mysterious insects showing up inside your tube skylight?

All of these conditions can be caused by age or improper installation, and they don’t necessarily mean the tube skylights need to be replaced.

Naturalight Solar recently performed a service call for an owner of two twenty-year-old tubes of unknown brand. The tubes had stopped giving out light and when our certified installation specialist took a look in the attic, he found that both tubes had only been taped at their seams when originally installed. After twenty years, the tape had failed, causing the tubes to fall apart in the attic. The tubes themselves were in fine condition, so our installer screwed them back together and re-taped the seams.

When the tube seams are connected and aligned properly with screws and tape, there are no places for bugs to enter, no pieces shifting down from the ceiling, and lots of natural light.

If you are experiencing a problem with your old tube skylight, give us a call to schedule a service appointment at 707-527-5330.

February: Month of Love and Light!

Most of us know February 2nd as Groundhog Day, a beloved American tradition where we wait to see if a groundhog, most notably, Punxsutawney Phil, emerges from his burrow to tell us know how long winter will last.

This tradition has it roots in another festival, celebrated by many other cultures around the world. February 2nd marks the mid-point between Winter Solstice (the day when there is the least daylight hours of the year) and the Spring Equinox.

Known by many names, the Festival of Light marks the day when some of the first seasonal changes from winter to spring can be observed; like the first buds of leaves on the trees, and the first blades of grass emerging.

As the daylight lengthens and we emerge from our winter selves, we can use this time to be more bold, productive, and to enact positive change in our own lives and in our communities.

Here at Naturalight Solar we are feeling renewed and invigorated for 2016 and we hope that you are too!

How to Measure for a Curb Mount Skylight

It is important to know the dimensions for your replacement skylight so the correct size can be ordered to fit the existing curb.
When ordering or describing a skylight, the measurements are always expressed as width (dimension horizontally across the roof) x length(dimension vertically up the roof).

The Outside Curb Dimension is the overall outside dimension size (OD) of the finished, built-up curb. To determine a correctly sized replacement skylight, also include the necessary roofing materials (such as?) and sheet metal flashing. Skylights are sized slightly larger than the OD of the curb in order to fit over the top like a box cover.

Do You Have Potato Chips on Your Roof?

Plastic tube skylight flashings become brittle from exposure to the sun and rain, until they crack, kind of like potato chips. Crunchy, brittle potato chips are a delicious snack, but this quality is not so great in skylight flashings, which will leak when they crack and crumble.

VELUX SUN TUNNEL skylights have metal, one piece, seamless flashings, so you won’t ever again have to worry about potato chip flashings on your roof.
If your skylight flashings look like this, or you notice a leak, give us a call. Keep all your potato chips inside your home.
