Skylights that Pay for Themselves

New VELUX Energy Performance Model Skylights Combine
Energy Efficiency with Cost Savings for Homeowners

Homeowners can maximize energy efficiency and take advantage of a 30 percent federal tax credit with the new VELUX Energy Performance Model skylight featuring automated energy performance.

Launching at the 2017 International Builders’ Shown in Orlando, Florida, the Energy Performance Model combines and Energy Star-certified VELUX fixed skylight with a factory-installed, double-pleated, solar-powered, blackout blind and a preprogrammed Intelligent Touch Remote Control in one box.

“When closed, the double pleated blind boots the overall energy performance of the Energy Star-certified skylight by 40 percent,” said Ross Vandermark, national product manager for VELUX. “And the blinds are fully automated when the room is not in use, closing during the warm summer days and cold winter nights to block light and insulate.”

With a 30 percent federal tax credit, homeowners will receive an average of $730 in federal tax credit eligibility.

“The federal tax credit makes this product very affordable for homeowners looking to make a big impact on their home decor as well as their utility bills,” Vandermark said.

VELUX is an Energy Star partner and has been recognized as a Partner of the Year. For more information, visit www.whyskylights.com or naturalightsolar.com.

Part Four: 4 Reasons You Need More Natural Light

Last week, in part three, we looked at how having more natural light can Reduce Eyestrain and Headaches.
If you missed it, you can read it here.

This week we will look at how having more natural light can make A Happier You.

Studies have shown than employees and students in buildings full of natural light are happier, healthier, and more productive than those who are working under electric or fluorescent lighting.

Eveer heard of Seasonal Affectice Disorder (SAD)? During the winter, people don’t receive as much Vitamin D from the sunlight and can suffer the consequences, such as depression. A similar problem can occur year round if you spend a lot of time under artificial lighting rather than natural sunlight.

Having enough Vitamin D is an important way a person can stay in a good mood. And this vitamin has numerous other benefits as well, including immune system regulation, body weight maintenance, asthma symptom control, and helping the brain to continue working efficiently into later life. The best way to increase your body’s Vitamin D generation is exposure to natural light.

While no home is the same, you have a plethora of different choices for adding natural light to yours. Skylights are a perfect solution for improving the brightness in any room in your home. Small skylights or tube skylights can even fit into small spaces where you wish you had more light, including bathrooms, stairways, hallways, closets, and laundry rooms. New, high quality skylights are much more energy efficient than skylights from even ten years ago.

If your house is dimly lit, it may be time to add natural lighting. Naturalight Solar offers a large selection of skylights to help you live a healthier, brighter life. With our experts here to help you, you can find the right skylight and have it installed in a matter of days.

Replace Old Skylights Before they Fly Away

Mother nature sometimes lets us know when we’ve been neglecting a project by making it impossible to put the project off any longer. This happened to a homeowner recently when their old acrylic dome skylight was blown right off the roof during a storm.

The old, inefficient plastic skylight was due for replacing anyway. Before another storm could hit, we installed a new, energy efficient, flat glass VELUX Fixed Curb Mount 2×4 skylight. Well secured and durable enough to make it safely through the toughest storms, this homeowner is ready to weather many more winters.

We recommend replacing your old skylight before mother nature begins the work for you. If you’re not sure how much life your skylight has left, whether it’s in danger of leaking, cracking, or being blown away, you can schedule a performance check-up with Naturalight Solar by calling our office at 707-527-5330 or sending an email to info@naturalight.org.

And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth’s dark breast

How to Clean Your Skylights: Do’s and Don’ts

Cleaning Your Skylights Before and After Installation
Before Installation:
  1. On the ground, un-box the skylight and remove the labels from the glass.
  2. Clean the glass with mild soap and water.
  3. Put skylight back in box to move it onto the roof.
After Installation:
  1. As needed, about once a year, clean the skylight with mild soap and water.
  2. Sweep away any built-up debris around the flashing.

Do Not
  1. Do not clean the skylight glass when it is in direct sunlight or on a hot day. Streaks and splotches will be left on the glass and you could be burned.
  2. Do not use ammonia to clean the skylight; it can damage the coating on the glass.
  3. Do not leave labels on the glass; they will become cemented on by the sun.
  4. Do not use a blade or anything abrasive to scrape off old labels or other debris; this could chip the coating on the glass.
If you are unable to get on your roof to clean your skylights,
you can call or email us to schedule a service appointment.

How to Remove the Trim Ring on a VELUX SUN TUNNEL Skylight

Most of the time you won’t need to remove the trim ring once it is installed, but there are a few instances when you might want to know how. Perhaps you want to clean inside the diffuser, or change out your diffuser for a different style, or you want to protect the trim ring when re-painting the ceiling, or maybe you need to change out the light bulb on your light kit.

The trim ring clips into place on the ceiling assembly, so you will need to rotate the trim ring counter-clockwise until the clips line up, and then you will be able to gently pull the trim ring down.
When putting the trim ring back in place, make sure the gasket around the diffuser is not sticking out in places (if it is, just push it back into place), then line up the clips, and twist the trim ring clockwise until it is snug.

Here is a short video that demonstrates removing the trim ring and gasket:
